Fractal Axe-Fx II Patch based on the Bogner Ecstasy amplifier (Euro Blue&Red 20th anniversary)
The Bogner Ecstasy is a boutique amplifier head that lives at the intersection of vintage soul and modern aggression. Designed by Reinhold Bogner, it’s a sonic chameleon—an amp that caters to expressive blues players, classic rock riffers, and modern metal shredders alike. Among its many tonal tools, the Modern mode and the amplifier’s legendary Blue and Red channels stand out as defining features, offering some of the most dynamic and harmonically rich tones in the high-gain world.
The Ecstasy isn’t just an amp—it’s a fully loaded tone machine. With a complex control layout, including multiple voicing switches, gain structure options, and response controls, it gives players almost surgical control over their sound. But at its core, it remains intuitive, designed with the player’s feel and interaction in mind.
Blue Channel – The Sweet Spot
The Blue channel is where many players find their tonal home. It bridges the gap between classic British crunch and more aggressive mid-gain tones. Think rich harmonics, tight lows, and just enough bite to cut through a mix without overwhelming it.
With Modern mode engaged, the Blue channel takes on a tighter, more forward character. The low end firms up, the attack becomes more immediate, and the upper mids sharpen—perfect for articulate rhythm playing, edge-of-breakup riffs, and dynamic lead tones. It’s ideal for players who want responsiveness without sacrificing warmth.
Red Channel – High-Gain Heaven
Then there’s the Red channel—a high-gain beast that still maintains the musicality and three-dimensional tone that Bogner amps are known for. In standard mode, it's fat and rich, almost creamy at times. But flip the Modern mode switch, and it transforms.
Modern mode tightens the response, boosts the presence, and adds a refined aggression that’s tailor-made for drop-tuned riffs, technical solos, and any style that demands punch and clarity at high volumes. It doesn’t just get louder—it gets more focused, more intense, and more precise.
This channel is often the go-to for players who love saturated distortion but don’t want to lose definition or feel buried in the mix. It’s articulate, vocal, and highly responsive to pick attack.
Modern Mode – Precision Without Sterility
Modern mode on the Ecstasy isn't just a simple EQ tweak—it’s a fundamental shift in the amp’s voice. Across both Blue and Red channels, it alters the amp’s power section behavior, tightening up the low end and pushing the amp into a more aggressive, high-definition zone.
Unlike some amps that become harsh when you push them, the Ecstasy retains its musicality, even when it's roaring. This makes it a rare breed: a high-gain amp that feels alive and organic, not clinical.
It’s particularly popular among guitarists who blend vintage tone with modern power. Some notable users include:
- Steve Lukather (Toto) – Known for his expressive lead tones, Lukather has praised the Ecstasy for its versatility and feel.
- Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) – While he’s most associated with the Bogner Shiva and Fish preamp, he has used the Ecstasy for its rich, saturated tones.
- George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob) – A longtime fan of Bogner amps, Lynch has used the Ecstasy in various studio and live setups.
- Steve Vai – Though primarily a Legacy user, Vai has experimented with the Ecstasy for specific tones and projects.
- Justin Derrico (P!nk’s guitarist) – Uses the Ecstasy for its powerful lead sounds and dynamic clean-to-crunch transitions.
- Reinhold Bogner himself has built and voiced the amp with input from numerous session players and touring pros, helping it become a secret weapon in many rigs—even when it's not front and center in an artist's branding.
