FM3/FM9/AXE-FX III Patch based on EVH 5150 III amplifier
The EVH 5150 III amplifier is the result of years of evolution, experimentation, and Eddie Van Halen's relentless pursuit of sonic perfection.
The 5150 III isn't merely a rehash of his earlier collaborations with other brands—most notably the original Peavey 5150. Instead, it's a refined and re-engineered amplifier that blends old-school muscle with modern flexibility. Built in partnership with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation under Eddie’s personal EVH brand, this amp represents the culmination of everything he wanted in a high-performance tube amp.
At its core, the 5150 III is a 100-watt all-tube amplifier, designed to deliver crushing high-gain tones while maintaining articulation and clarity. It’s loaded with seven 12AX7 preamp tubes and four 6L6 power tubes, offering a robust and dynamic response across the tonal spectrum. Whether you’re chasing searing leads or percussive rhythm tones, the 5150 III delivers.
The amp is known for its three-channel design—each meticulously voiced for distinct styles:
- Channel 1 (Clean): Surprisingly pristine and chimey, a departure from the earlier 5150 amps known more for grit than glass. It handles everything from jazz cleans to light crunch when pushed.
- Channel 2 (Crunch): Perfect for hard rock, this channel adds midrange bite and saturation, while retaining enough clarity to stand out in a dense mix.
- Channel 3 (Lead): This is where the amp truly roars. Tailored for high-gain soloing and heavy riffing, it’s tight, aggressive, and defined—ideal for metal and modern rock.
Each channel has its own independent EQ section, and the amp includes presence and resonance controls for tailoring the high-end shimmer and low-end thump. A series effects loop, MIDI switching capabilities, and speaker impedance selector round out its versatility for both studio and stage use.
The amp is available in multiple formats, including:
- EVH 5150 III 100-Watt Head
- EVH 5150 III 50-Watt Head
- EVH 5150 III LBX/LBX-S (Lunchbox) — a smaller, more portable version
- EVH 5150 III Stealth and Iconic Series — variants with unique tonal tweaks and aesthetic updates
What sets the 5150 III apart is its tight low-end response, aggressive yet articulate gain, and ability to cut through in a mix without becoming harsh or muddy. Metal and rock players love it for its raw power, but the amp is surprisingly versatile, capable of adapting to genres that require more subtlety.
One of the key traits of the amp is its note separation—even under heavy gain, complex chords and fast runs remain distinct. This makes it a favorite not just for rhythm guitarists, but also lead players who want definition and sustain.
While the 5150 III clearly caters to high-gain aficionados, its clean channel and dynamic responsiveness make it suitable for a wide range of genres. It’s ideal for:
- Metal guitarists looking for tight, modern tones
- Rock players wanting versatile gain stages
- Studio musicians needing reliable and repeatable tones
- Eddie Van Halen fans chasing his signature sound
Even after Eddie's passing in 2020, his sonic fingerprint lives on through every note played on a 5150 III. More than just gear, it’s a piece of rock history—an amplifier born from obsession, refined by experience, and built to inspire.
