FM3/FM9/AXE-FX III patch based on the Marshall Plexi 100W amplifier

The Marshall Plexi 100W, officially known as the Marshall Super Lead Model 1959, is a cornerstone of electric guitar tone. First introduced in 1965, this amp became the weapon of choice for rock legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, and Pete Townshend. It captures the essence of raw, unfiltered rock ‘n’ roll power. For purists, collectors, and tone chasers, owning or emulating a Plexi is a rite of passage.

Its nickname, “Plexi,” comes from the plexiglass front panels used on early models from around 1965 to 1969. These early "Plexi-era" amps are especially revered for their raw power, musical breakup, and harmonically rich distortion.

In very few words, the the Plexi 100W is brutally loud. Suffice to say that there is No Master Volume: these amps are meant to be cranked—true tone comes at high volumes. Many players today use power attenuators or modelers to tame its volume and techs have modded Plexis over the decades—Eddie Van Halen famously used one with a Variac and a dummy load to create his “Brown Sound".

This is the amp that defined the classic rock sound of the late '60s and '70s. Think:

  • Jimi Hendrix – “Voodoo Child”
  • Jimmy Page – “Whole Lotta Love”
  • Angus Young – “Back in Black”
  • Eddie Van Halen (modded with a Variac) – “Eruption”
